It has been over a month since Nevada entered into a state of “shelter in place,” bringing about a whole new daily routine for most of us. Life is not the same for any of us at the moment as the Covid-19 pandemic has forced most of the country into a state of quarantine. Life is much different, but one thing remains the same: I still see the world through musicals. Here is my take on a day in our post-Covid-19 lives. I present, Quarantine: A Musical Playlist!
1.) Waking Up – “Waving Through A Window” from Dear Evan Hansen
When you wake up and stare out the window drinking your morning coffee. Is anybody waving back at me?
2.) Trying To Decide If You Should Even Get Dressed – “I’m Not Wearing Underwear Today” from Avenue Q
We’ve all seen the pictures of people who log into Zoom meetings and aren’t wearing any pants.
3.) When You Decide That You Will Not Spend Another Day Binge-Watching TV – “No More Wasted Time” from If/Then
I will not spend another day re-watching Charmed on Netflix!
4.) You’re Going To Get So Many Household Projects Taken Care Of – “Happy Working Song” from Enchanted
My neighbors and I cleaned our yard and started a community garden. Also, my apartment is cleaner than ever! Oh, and yes I do put on a fluffy princess dress while completing these tasks!
5.) Some Of Us Still Have To Go To Work Or Are Working From Home – “Racing With The Clock” from The Pajama Game
Most of us working from home feel like we are working more than ever through this pandemic; and that, of course, is nothing compared to what essential workers who still have to report to work are facing.
6.) Some Of Us Are Picking Up New Skills – “The Rain In Spain” from My Fair Lady
I’ve heard from parents, teachers, and students about how frustrating online classes have been and the beginning of this scene does represent a lot of those feelings. Others have picked up new skills on their own during this period (I’ve been watching beginning dance videos on YouTube), which is definitely reflected in this song.
7.) Venturing Out Of The House – “Masquerade” from The Phantom of the Opera
The fashion accessory of the season is facemasks. Mine has strawberries on it.
8.) The Bills Keep Rolling In – “Rent” from RENT
Unemployed? That doesn’t stop the bills from rolling in. Also, how do you document real life when real life is getting more like fiction each day?
9.) You Feel All Alone – “Lonely Room” from Oklahoma!
Who hasn’t felt like they are going stir crazy and missing their social groups?
10.) Virtual Happy Hours – “Drink! Drink! Drink! (Drinking Song)” from The Student Prince
One of the things that has kept me from slipping into a deep depression is virtual happy hours socializing with friends. I’ve read that alcohol sales are up since the shelter in place order. My friends are also bad influences.
11.) Then Edibles Sound Like A Good Idea – “My Brownie” from Reefer Madness: The Musical
You can now order cannabis products delivered to your house like a pizza. Usually, edibles lead to a pizza order as well!
12.) Remember, No One Is Alone – “No One Is Alone” from Into the Woods
At the end of the day, we are all in this together. This is being felt throughout the entire world. Our generations will forever be impacted by what is happening right now. We are not alone.
