2008—2009 Season
Reno Little Theater brings to Artown 2009 a modernized version of the classic fairytale, with older children, humor, and lessons relevant to today's youth. In this touring production, Hansel and Gretel are trying to be "cool" teenagers, while dealing with a new, stricter stepmother, the death of their real mother, and the family's poverty. When they discover a wonderful new neighbor, who lives in a candy house, lets them eat all the sweets they want, and really seems to care about them, they make up excuses to visit her again and again, despite increased risks. They learn the hard way that people are not always as they seem—and there are consequences for unhealthy choices. The audience is enlisted to help Hansel and Gretel with their decisions and to get home safely. Afterwards, the actors and the audience will discuss the play.
